Searching for a pipeline is not tricky.

Locating metal pipes is something technology has been capable of for years. All electrically conductive pipe and cable systems which are subject to an electromagnetic force field when exposed to audio frequencies can be detected with an appropriate pipe locating equipment. Two methods have proven themselves.

Inductive checking of pipe and cable trays

With this method, the frequency generator is placed above the tray, and a coil system induces a force field on the tray. This method can be used to check long distances. The disadvantage of such inductive check, however, is that the search current may jump to any parallel line making a reliable tracing of a particular pipe or tray impossible.

Galvanic coupling

The galvanic coupling method uses a frequency generator which is directly connected with a pipe or contact spot via cable. The second wire is used for earthing. This method is the most reliable method to locate a pipe as the search current travels in a relatively stable way on the particular tray.


Non-metal pipes made of PVC, PE, pottery, concrete or asbestos cement cannot be detected with the above-mentioned method, and some additional resources such as an inserted wire or cable are required. Exposing such additional resources to a frequency then makes the operator more or less reliably detect the pipe or tray desired.
This method not only has a mechanical but also to a physical limit. It is impossible to determine a final point of the pipe / tray concerned as the search current approaches zero a few metres before the end and never reaches the final point (end).

The solution is GSS and GSM

GSS glass fibre probe system

A glass fibre rod featuring high shear stability and equipped with special, integrated copper wires is the solution. The rod has a diameter of 7.4mm and allows not only precise tracing of a tray, but the firmly inbuilt coil also allows a precise determination of the final point.

Glass fibre system mini

The GSM was designed for special application purposes and has a rod with a diameter of 4.5mm. This device is also equipped with special internal conductors and does not have a coil at its end but a flex-point. This flex-point allows the operator to reach almost the final point of the rod while conducting the measurement process. The GSM is galvanically exposed, like the GSS, and is used for the same operation purpose.
